Some people ride with them on in the day so cars can see them. Sounds to me like the guy you saw had super whites or whatever, and could probably use aimed. No worse than the loud pipe assholes. Actually, the pipes prolly piss off more people than the lights.

i always ride with my highs on.  i havent had anyone but 1 biker flash his highs at me... so hopefully they arent to bad,  i do it at night so i can see, cuz my normal beams are really weak, and as hondatech said, i ride with them in the day so ppl see me easier *hopefully it works*

I used to ride with my highs on all the time, then one of my friends complained, and I've had some with highbeams practically blind me so I only rode with them on during the day. I would say thats your best bet.

I have horrible night vision anyways (due to this wonderfully technological age of flourescent lights and blaring CRT monitors), so sometimes even the cars with the HID lights make it so its extrememly hard for me to see (all I see is the lights and everything else turns black). I just notice them out of the corner of my eye now and dont look that direction. I do think it is extrememly rude though and I even sometimes flash my lights at motorcycles with brights on. (My 89 Mazda high beams are shit anyways, so its nothing like the real highbeams on a modern car or motorcycle).

One interesting thing about my horrible vision though, I went backpacking for 2 months, wasnt inside or in front of any electronics the whole time and my eye sight was back to normal. Interesting how that works.

My 2 cents.

Anyone who rides with high beams on in a car or on a bike are just inconsiderate idiots!

If your lows are too soft; get new bulbs!!!!!! Clean the front of your light!!!!!!!

Not during the day. If your lights are aimed right, no one would even know your brights are on. This amuses me. You pople think high beams are so bad, but I bet you don't have a stock pipe do you?

At night it's not the greatest because it can do worse for other people as TR suggested.  But during the day it shouldn't matter at all.  I usually flick mine on momentarily if i'm approaching an intersection during the daytime (especially if i know someone's turning left and may not see me)  I've seen lots of bikes with brights or both lights on during the day....doesn't bother me at all unless i'm glaring at it.......from 2 feet away.

I think part of the problem is that people are too anal about it and looking right at the lights. If you're not staring straight at them,  they won't bother you. Loud ass pipes on the other hand can bug you even laying in your bed 100 yards away. Get what I'm saying here? Loud pipes, they suck. They are doing more damage to us than lights will ever do. Run straight pipes, and two million candle power spot lights for a day. At the end of the day, I bet the pipes wil have pissed off more people.

well i hate to say it,  and sound ignorant, but when im riding at night i want to see...  i DO flick my highs off for mortorcyles cuz i dont want to blind them.  but not cars... what happens to me when i hit a deer?  die?  what happens to a  guy in a car?  the fact is, motorcycles are a million times more unsafe than cars so i do what i can to make my visibility best, and i dont want to hinder any other cyclist either.  i DO have new bulbs in my bike and the lows are still to low for my comfort.

again i dont mean to be a dick but whos in the more dangerous position, me with my highs off and losing how many feet of visibility? or the guy in the car who can easily look away from my light for 3 seconds?

and yeah lol do what justin says Wink  he recently gave me a stock pipe. (thanks again) first time ive heard my bike with a stock pipe and i love it.   so much cleaner sound. and you can actually hear what goes on with your bike incase something is wrong.

What happens? Maybe he drifts across the double yellow and smacks your dumb pierced ass.

Sounds like your light needs aimed. Remind me next time your up.

You're both pretty dangerous. If you fall and he runs over those things you have through your eye brow, he may lose a tire, cross lanes and run off the berm. Maybe hit a cow.

Damn. Easily the smartest thing you've ever said.

What I could never understand is how people think pipes sound more powerful. To me, when you hear a pipe, it just sounds like it's screaming for mercy. When you hear a bike with stock pipe, it sounds like pure power. When you give it the stick, you can practically hear the little guy in the engine room dumping more coal on the fire. All it took for me was standing in a parking lot while a bunch of bikes went past. The last one had a stock pipe and the sound of the motor made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. By the way, I have your pipe still. I leaned it against the telephone pole out front in hopes that the Fast and the Furious punks across the street would take it to use as a fart can on one of their Civics or Neons. If you want it back, let me know.

Ok Justin. And the rest of you.......

I have a STOCK pipe. I don't ride with my high beams on. If you need your high beams on so that you can drive at night whether in a car or on a bike; you shouldn't be driving/riding. Period. It's that simple.

High beams are for when there is no one else on the road for a good mile or more in front of you. And there's no oncoming traffic. And there are no streetlights. If all of these factors are met it's pretty safe to say that you don't/can't have a very good view or idea of what the road physically looks like in front of you. So the high beams give you a GREATER DISTANCE IN VISIBILITY! That's it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I see a car just as well at night wether it's high beams are on or not. Same with a bike. If I don't see it, it's because I wasn't paying attention and I'm a crappy driver in the first place! And yes, headlights during the day do make a vehicle more visible at longer distances. But wether or not your highs are on makes no difference during the day.

Oh, and by the way; you can be ticketed for driving with your high beams on for no reason. Reckless driving ticket in most states. If you are blinding other drivers you are a hazard to safety on the road.

So maybe you all should stop thinking of yourselves only and how "visible" you are to other people and start treating other motorists the way you'd like to be treated.

Oh wait. How silly of me. People already hate motorcyclists and try and kill us every time we ride. So screw them, right?

Simma down sarge. I agree with you. At night, high beams should only be used when they don't bother anyone. I firmly believe that we as a group need to be very concerned about pising off the non-riders. But during the day, high beams don't hurt anyone unless they are staring right at them. Or they need aimed. I don't ride with my brights on during the day, but others do and it doesn't bother me.
