One small step...
« on: June 8, 2002, 01:29:06 PM »

Well, I tried to take pics to show my latest accomplishment but they just didn't do it justice.  So here's the rundown.

I blew the tranny on my F4 last Sunday, picked up a 2000 F4 and brought it back with the intentions of swapping engine, keeping a few bits and parting out the rest in order to pay for the whole thing.  I had some doubts about my abilities to put a bike back together, as all I've ever done was take them completely apart.  However, last night the disassembly knowledge REALLY came into play when putting it back together.

I found it soooooo much easier to just set the motor on the floor and set the frame on top of it versus jacking the 125lb motor up into a 27lb frame!  The swingarm was a bitch for a while because the rear motor bolt goes through the swingarm, so on disassembly it all falls apart.  However, it came back together nicely.  I followed the manual's instructions of tightening bolts in a specific order and to the right torque values.  I should really call Honda though and let them know that their manual is contradictary in a BAD way.  In the engine mounting section, it states to torque the swingarm pivot nut down to 29ft-lbs where in the rear suspension section, it gives a torque value of 69ft-lbs for this puppy.  Being as how I had to REALLY wrench this thing to get it off, I opted for the 69lbs.

I don't think that Honda ever uses a torque wrench though because most of the bolts which were supposed to be 29ft-lbs felt like 100 when taking them out.

Anyhow, I'll end my senseless rambling now.  Just wanted to share with you all that if you're contemplating whether you can do something or not, go for it...  (although the old engine is still coming to you Justin for the rebuild.  I'm not that brave).

Oh, and out of it all, what gave me the hardest time?  The FRIGGIN throttle cables!  Spent +1.5 hours on them bastards!

If that is your version of one small step, i would like to hear you version of a giant leap.  I can say that because I do only very minor maintenance to my bike.  So will you have it back together in time for your next race?

Removing a bolt always requires more torque than it was tightened with. Actually, I've all but quit using my torque wrenches. I just kind of judge everything. But, I guess that comes from doing it everyday to put food on my table. <g> Gimme a hollar if you decide you're gonna ship me that motor to rebuild the tranny. BTW, your next engine installation will take roughly half the time. It's one of those jobs that seems tough, but once you've done it, it's way easy. I bet I could remove and replace the motor in my 900 or 600 in 3 hours, start to finish.
