If it ain't broke...of course it is!!
|
Anybody have first hand experience with the following brands: Alpinestars, Teknik, Spidi, Fieldsheer, Joe Rocket. I'm wondering mostly about quality of construction and durability. I'm looking for a well fitting good quality (~$300USD) leather jacket for daily wear, and I do not want something that makes me look like a racer wanna-be. Any specific recommendations would be appreciated.

hey nf. a few years back bought joe rocket ballistic (not the leather) jacket and pants. i like the jacket because with venting and removable liner it is very versitile. the pants have only soaked through once, twas really pouring. wearing the jacket does not leave me looking like a hood or wanna be anything. the only thing that bugs me about them is they are supposed to be made of stuff that will protect me if i go down. darn near deflect a bullet, but, hand wash! go figure. just giving ya my 25cents or 4$ cdn

Jeffy sent me!

Well, Teknic sucks. I know someone here is gonna say they have Teknic and say I'm full of shit, but trust me, and ask Jeff, Teknic is squid junk. I don't have too much experience with those other brands except for Joe Rocket. I'm very happy with Joe Rocket. They had a bad rep a few years back as a company that just made leathers for looks, but they've changed all that and make very nice stuff now. I have some advice for you. If it's for everyday riding, skip leather. It's nice, but for everyday riding, it just can't match textile. My most used jacket is my Joe Rocket Metor. With it's zip out liner and EXCELLENT ventelation system, it can be used in temps from 40 to 80. It's also completley water proof, and has tons of pocket room. It's also $200 and fully armored. You just can't beat it. http://www.joerocket.com/catalog/item.cfm?products_id=195 While you're surfing around the Joe Rocket wesite, also check out the light speed jacket, very nice as well, but not as versitile. The Pheonix is the other jacket I use a lot. It's fully padded, but made out of this really tough mesh, so it's really cool. Also, if you're looking for a street suit, it's tough to beat the razor. http://www.joerocket.com/catalog/item.cfm?products_id=187 It's got all the bells and whistles of a leather suit, but is water resistant and vented. Very nice suit, my brother has one and loves it. It's also a bargain. I know I sould like a Joe Rocket salesman, but I can't stress enough how good this company takes care of it's customers. If you call them, you can talk to a real person, and they know their shit, they tell you exactly what size to get. BTW, I can also speak highly of their gloves and boots as well.

I have the phoenix jacket and pants as well. Never really wear the pants though. Jacket is sweet!
I have a Honda leather jacket. Call me a "racer wannabe" or not but I love it. It's the RC51 style but my bike is silver/red so it matches perfect.

thanks for the advice to date, but I already have a meteor jacket and ballistic pants. Its good technical stuff but I hate the way the JR textile stuff is cut. The neck is too small, the belly too large, the sleeves too full. I want a leather jacket for a better (more snug) fit and to use on the occassional track day paired up with my kevlar reinforced textile pants. Most leather stuff I've test fit has been tailored to fit a human way better. So on that note, any more advice...

So how do JR leathers compare to other brands in terms of durability, stitch quality, leather and dye quality...

hondatech, your full of shit just kidding!
I have the teknic speedstar jacket and I am happy with it. I didn't do a ton of research when I got it, so maybe it is junk, I don't know. I am happy with the construction and comfort, but have never crashed in it. It is fully armored and comes with a back protector. http://www.teknicgear.com/pages/collections/grandprix/jacket.html
