2nd gear slip
« on: March 12, 2003, 10:07:13 PM »

Hey guys, my friend has a 99 f4 and is having a problems with his tranny. sometimes when he goes into 2nd it will pop right out into neutral. sometimes right away. sometimes after a few seconds. I am no mechanic, but I have checked the shifting linkage and made sure its getting in there all the way. other gears seam to work fine. which leads me to believe that there could be something wrong with the gear itself. the bike has around 20,000 miles on it. I rode it to make sure it wasn't lazy foot syndrome and I cant get the thing to say in 2nd either. what do you guys think! please help.

Could be either the shift fork or the gear dogs. If I were betting, my money would be on the dogs.  This requires engine removal and case splitting. The parts are cheap, the labor isn't. At 20,000 the bike is young. Either your friend, or the bikes previous owner was not kind to the bike. Second is always the first to go because when acelerating hard, you tend to hit second hard, but have eased up by third. So, new riders and bad riders tend to go through second gears.

If i may ask, what is the shift fork?

Well, your shifter is connected to a shift shaft. Inside the cases, the shift shaft spins the shift drum. The shift drum is a cylinder that is grooved, the grooves kind of zig zag around the drum. The forks sit in the gooves on one end, and on the other, the fork rides on the gears themselves. In the middle, the fork rides on a rod. So, when you shift, the drum turns and the fork moves to the side, moving the gears along the shaft so that the dogs engage the next gear. It's kind of tough to expain. I guess I could go take pictures, I think I have a transmission tore apart downstairs, but I don't really feel like it. If you decide to tackle the job yourself, let me know and I'll snap some pics.

It's not that hard of a job and requires no special tools save for an impact wrench.  I just rebuilt the tranny on my 99 F4 and would be glad to help in whatever way I can.

whatsup people, my 00 f4 is slipping in to neutral, but only when i get on it to give it gas, also it sometimes boggs out when i give it gas but only past about 9rpm.
i just put a c5 two brothers exhaust on it, so i think that started the bogging but i switched back to the standard to see if that was makin it bog, but it still bogged. if you have any help let me know
thanks - dustin

I have recently purchased a 02 f4i to go with my 94 1000f. The transmition jumps out of 2nd gear at 4000.
I'm currently changing parts. I guess my question is can you change the forks from the bottom? I know you have to change the gears by splitting the case. it looks like you might be able to pull the barrel and the fork rod from the right side and get the forks out. Would 2nd gear be on the right side of the engine or left? The manual is not clear.
