Riding boots
« on: March 5, 2003, 12:10:00 AM »

I tried on some boots today at the local Yamaha Dealer (only one in town with street boots)  And None of the boots seem to fit very well.  The Joe rocket blaster boot fit my foot OK but would not close over my calf.  the Oxtar TCS boots fit my calve but the the boot was too tight on the top of my foot. (but might break in)

So Any suggestions on how a boot should fit.  Do they usually stretch a little with use? or first fit is what you get?

I want to get real riding boots for the season and hopfully a track day or two. Grin

Thanks

i would just say to keep in mind that the boot will fit differently while you're on your bike in the "forward riding position"  So basically i guess that means if you're standing upright with the boot on, there should be some space between your upper shin and the boot (i think that's right)  THe same principle applies to buying a suit....they fit completely differently while on the bike.

I would suggest for you to look around a bit before you buy one hot off the shelf.  I got a wicked pair of sidis for 200CDN which were i think 450+ retail at the time.  I was out with a group of guys i had just met and mentioned that i was looking for a pair.  Sure enough, one of them had a buddy who was selling some in my size.  I would never have bought the sidis for retail because honestly my riding ability does not yet require a "toe slider."  Yes they are kickass boots, but a little bit overkill.  I forget how much the joe rocket ones are, but don't get suckered into buying the latest-greatest boot if something 100 bucks less suits you fine, all-be-it not look quite as cool....but hey it's your dough Wink

My toe scraped a few times the other day for the first time(s). Even with the balls of my feet on the peg. Still I couldn't stick my knee out to get it to rub a little. Is that supposed to be happen? The first time my toe rubbed it scared the poo out of me. I thought my foot was about to get sucked under the bike. I'll get some pictures of my shoes.

If you're trying to get your knee down on the street, you ned to get thyself to a track ASAP. Do you fully understand why racers put their knee down? It really serves no purpose on the road. This type of riding *will* kill you on the road. It's not if, it's when. Phil, help me out here....

Ok, first boots. I've got some aplinestar stage GTX boots. They are awesome for the street, totally waterproof and very comfortable. I often forget to change out of them and end up walking around the office half the day in them. For racing, I've got Sidi vertebra II's. great protection, but not as comfortable, but that's not their point.

If you are dragging anything on the street (toes, knees, pegs, bodywork) you are riding too fast. To be safe that those lean angles you really need to be on the track. On the street there are just too many things to hit. Also if you are dragging your feet and not your knees, then something is wrong with your riding style. Knees usually touch sooner than feet, even on an older bike like an F2.

I live about 40 minutes north of Atlanta, we were about 30 minutes north of here. Which is almost to TN. Near the mountains where we were there are not that many people. On this 8-10 mile road there are about 10 homes immediately on the road and maybe 10 more off of it. We rode it first and then had one person at either side. Me, the 929 and the rc51 were going on the road together, with the 929's dad at one end and a fz1 at the other. That took care of cars. We rode it once and found two spots of light gravel - noted them. The only other problem on that road was the cows. One got out of the pen, but thankfully didn't get in the road. The 929's dad has lived here for the past ohhhhh 40 something years. A cop came and asked him what he was doing on the road and he complemented us. I know it would be safer on a track, but we do take many precations.

What size are those boots phil?

I've got the Joe Rockets...only got them 'cause I needed boots to go with the suit I got when Moto Liberty was having that sale plus the hundred off for mentioning Jeff.

I've only ever nicked my toe once. I was shifting up in a turn and right when I put my toe under the shifter my sole bounced off the pavement. I thought I was gonna break my ankle! So needless to say I don't (and shouldn't) shift while in a turn.

As for touching a knee I can't get anywhere near that low. I've felt like a moron because of it. Just 'cause other people do. But I've never felt that I was taking a turn so fast that I needed to lean the bike that much. I guess that I've been right..........

hey i agree it's not the brightest to try and lean more and more on the street (and yes i realize that the reason a racer does it is to guage his lean angle.....not to look cool Wink) But i don't stunt (yet i guess) so giving an offramp some shit that i'm very familiar with is just my way of having fun on my bike.  I don't like riding stupid fast so i enjoy cornering.  YES i should go to the track.....YES i AM going to the track.....but no i can't help it if i am addicted to ramps.

I just like the feeling i get when my head is getting thrust down onto my tank and the way I stick to the seat when i'm leaning that far. I am just trying to get touch my knee to the ground so I'll know I'm that far over.

But the way I see it is if you're getting through your curves comfortably at the right speed (speed limit I guess) then you're leaning enough.

Boots are a size 46 which is around 11.5/12 in US size. And I'll say again that I love these boot because they are so comfortable. If you've got duck feet however, your going to have a problem no matter.

I don't want to sound like anyones mother and I'm not say you have to ride the speed limit all the time. I certainly don't. And prescaning the route is a great thing to do. But there is a difference between riding quick and riding fast(dragging stuff). I still ride quick on the street. Even twice the posted speed sometimes, but that still isn't close to draggin parts. In contrast, on the track, I can go though a corner pinned in 5th at 140mph and drag my boot, knee, peg, exhaust and lowers. Most corners I have to lift my knee up 3-4 inches to keep it from draggin to much.

Still the biggest problem with riding fast on the street is what happens afterward if you lose control for whatever reason. On the track you slide to a stop, get up and go get you bike. I've seen riders bail at 150+mph and walk away uninjured. However on the street there are just to many things to hit, hard things that will break bone and really fuck you up, like poles, trees, mailboxes, fences, barbwire, curbs, guardrails, etc. You get the point, you just don't walk away after hit any of those things even at like 40mph.

no, i don't think you sound like my old lady. Wink  In fact your advice is obviously good, but in my own defense, it's not like i would moderately push on a ramp with a fence, big curb, or a shit pile of the thin reflector signs that could cut me in half real quick.  I've still to touch anything down yet anyway, so i'm not doing anything stupid-fast Roll Eyes  And hey lets not forget something...if ya never leaned over further every once in a while while learning, you'd never get to the point where you'd think "yeah ok, now i should be doing this at a track and not on the street" .....so surely most of you have been there as well.

ON an aside, the boots i have are the sidi vertebrates as well.  They're the only bike boot i have and i love them. (As the name suggest, they flex in the heel) I have had no complaints in comfort, but then again, have had nothing to compare them to.  Joe rocket is a really good name though, many canadian racers use it, as well as some of the top dogs in AMA and such.

Well I went to denver the other day and went to 4 mc shops and tried on a bunch of boots.  I think I wear either a 45 or 46 but they didn't have both sizes in the boot models i was looking at.  on one boot the 45 was to small but they didn't have a 46 in stock, and on another brand the 46 was to big but the didn't have the 45 in stock.  So I guess I will just try to find a pair of boots i like online and take my chances.

I would like to support some of the local MC stores but if they don't ever have anything in stock I might as well get the stuff online and save some money!

Obviosly you've realized different brands sizes are different. You would buy something online and "take your chanches" of being too big or too small to save a little? What if you can't even get it on? That doesn't make much sense. I'd wait for the shop to get something in that you like. Do you need the boots soon or something?

Why are you taking a chance online? Just send them  back and get the next size up or down that you need. That's what I did.
