my mechanics advice on slip ons
« on: October 30, 2002, 09:51:05 PM »

A friend of my pop's used to be a mechanic for a kawi race team in canada and currently runs his own car shop.

I told him i wanted a slip-on pipe mostly for the sound and look.  I told him i didn't really care how much hp it gained me.  He told me that getting a pipe for those reasons would be a complete waste of money because:

1) i don't run my bike at continually high rpm to notice a difference a pipe is meant to change
2) it would likely not start up as well especially over time
3) he always recommends rejetting because of the rich/lean running..... which costs more money.
4) he says a large % of mechanic guys don't know dick about rejetting
5) i would have to repack the pipe most likely eventually

...and his biggest reason for talking me out of it:

6) because honda spends 100's of thousands of dollars in the engineering of exhaust system so that they should start and perform well in any climate, weather, etc.  where as pipe manufacturers couldn't give two shits....most aftermarket pipes are intentially made to help racers perform better at higher rpm.

Being an all-weather "mild mannered" (ride around 6-10rpm) street rider.....i decided to take his advice.  Damn. I wanted that M4.

something to think about for all of you street riders like myself thinking about pipes.  oh well, i guess my next project will be to redo the gearing instead of the pipe. i wonder what he has to say about that.........?

You said you wanted it for sound and looks, therefore, 1) doesn't apply.

2) I've never heard of happening, but I may just be ignorant.

3) is not 100% necessary w/ a s/o.

4) see above.

5) repacking the pipe is easy.

6) And if Honda spent so much damn time developing the exhaust, why the hell did they put so low as to limit the ground clearance?

Get the pipe. Smiley

The debate is on ...

I would agree about getting the pipe.

Whether is was engineered to work with stock or not, I want it for noise for the grey haired old lady beside me when she decides she wants to take my lane when I am in it!

If you only have enough too do one mod do the gearing and chain conversion. If you can do both get the can the sound of a pipe is worth it. just think about it man. I would go against your mechanic.

Do your suspension before getting the pipe once you have the suspension tuned you will have alot more fun riding and I don't mean run out and get a new rear shock. Just get some racetech springs put in the front and have the rear shock setup to your weight etc. It will make a world of difference

Honda probably does spend mega-bucks on the design of the exhaust system. However they have to work with the regulations the MTO / DMV enforce. Prime example of this is the noise level in which they have to be under. You can also have emissions play into the equation as well.

I put my V&H S4 on and I love it. Gained not a thing but it sounds faster Grin

see the thing is i totally agree......especially with the "loud pipes save lives" thing.  But the guy obviously knows his shit.  He just seems to think having slip ons are problematic RELATIVE to stock cans.  Plus he made a good point that if (...to which i replied "when") i crash, it would be alot cheaper just to toss on another stock pipe from the guys who sell them cheap because they use aftermarkets for racing.  But damn.....i'm young and dumb......and i want noise baby, VVRROOOOOOOOOMM!

i dunno.

haha......the comment about ground clearance and engineering made me laugh too.....so true.

Ryan seriously do the suspension stuff it will far outweigh the slip on in many ways because once you have your suspension set up better you will find you can go faster and have more fun with the bike and it really isn't that expensive unless you replace your rear shock. I have to say though get the racetech springs done up front and get the rear shock dialed in for your weight etc it will be like a night and day differnece

I personally can't see the point to a slip on. It's just a wanna be! It's like those dudes who can't afford a cat-back for their Civic; but still want the sound, so they just get a tip put on it. WTF?!?!?! Any money put into the engine, exhaust, or suspension on my bike will be for performance; not looks and sounds! Sure, I want my bike to look and sound good too, but not without a performance advantage. I've seen a few bikes out there that these dudes just put slip on's on without re-jetting. What's the point? Save the cash and get the whole package. A full exhaust system with headers and everything as well a getting a new jet kit installed and the bike dyno'd. That's what I'm saving my hard green for. And until that day that I can afford all of that I will continue with my stock exhaust. I haven't seen another 2000 F4 pull away from me 'cause he has a slip on!

Know what ya sayin sargeek but a slip on gives looks and sound at a cheaper price than the full system.

As most people on the road get nowhere near the limits of a bikes performance, why pay the extra for a fewmore  hp when you're not gonna get the benefits?

I don't ride the bike to it's potential, atleast not yet, now why would I go and put on a full exhaust for it when I can get what I need out of a slipon.

As KODA said .... "Joud Pipes Save Lives!"

That, my friend, is why I have a slip on.

a full system is not going to help that much the bikes are already rockets with wheels. and if you want it to seem really fast do the gearing change. Loud pipes turn heads and get random boobs shown to you while you are riding Grin

gotta agree, whatever youre reason, if you want a loud pipe - get one.  I've got a scorpion end can, sounds nice, starts just as well as the stock pipe, runs well and if (when) I (did) drop it, I've still got the stock pipe in good nick ready for MOT testing time and when I want to trade the bike in.  Suppliers will usually tell you if a can will need the jets matching, most legalish cans don't for road use.

When I can ride my f4 to its potential I will not upgrade it for more perfomance, I will up grade it to a RC51.
I will probably get the RC before that happens (hopefully ) Grin
