valve adjustment/annoying noice
« on: May 15, 2002, 11:07:09 PM »

I have about 3500 miles logged on to my '01 f4i, and Im wondering when is a good time to get the valves adjusted? Just recently I'm starting to hear this low pitched rattling noise coming from the front of the bike. It kinda sounds like when you stick a card through the spokes of a bicycle wheel turning. Does anyone know what the heck that is? And if so, is it a bad noice for the wallet?

If I remember it correctly, the F4i's had a problem with their cam chain tensioner, so the bike kinda made a clunky noise at low rpm's. I'm pretty sure its a warranty deal so just bring it in to your local dealership and they should be able to take care of you.

I was just about to say "check the cct (cam chain tensioner). From what I've heard this is about when they seem to fail. I think its a recall problem so the dealer should be able to replace it free of charge. I guess they have had two revisions of this thing made and I guess the one name J22 or something like that seems to be holding up. The valves should need to be done until you hit 24000km. You won't hear any noisy when the valves need adjusting. They just won't seal properly therefore burning the valve seat. Follow the maintenance schedule in the manual and you should be fine.
