My buddie has a 91 FZR 600 and he busted the fork seals. Is it a job that we can do our self with moderate repair experience or should we get the work done at a shop. The estimate was $125 at the shop.

I would definatly try it myself. I own a /00 cbr 600 f4, I bought it from a kid that crashed it & bent the fork tubes. Myself & a couple of buddies ( & a case of good Canadian beer )  replaced tubes, bottom triple clamp, bearings & seals in an evening. You may have to use a little ingenuity to make tools to drive in the seals properly.
To make it easier a parts break down will show you the proper order to reinstall everything.

You'll need a fork seal driver, and a big pair of snap ring pliers. If you take the forks off, a shop would charge you less to do them than the tool would cost. It is something you can do, but, there are a few possible problems that can make it real tough on the home mechanic. A little corosionon the retaining ring holding the seal in can make it tough to get out. I've even seen the snap ring pliers completely break the ends of the ring off! Another possibile problem is stripping the bolt that goes up through the bottom of the forks is an allen head. Since it doesn't come out often, it seizes sometimes, then needs drilled. FZR's are especially prone to these problems because of their kinda junky build quality. I'm not trying to scare you, just make you aware. It can be done by the home wrench spinner, but be careful, and make sure you have a well stocked tool box capable of handling unexpected problems. Good luck!
