I'm a llama!
|
Bike has 5K miles. Has been well maintained and not abused. At about 3,000 miles the engine started to develop a rattling noise between 5-6,000 RPM. Performance does not seem hampered. Sounds like valve train noise to me. Is this a valve lash issue or maybe the cam chain tensioner? Not noisy at idle, only in the mid-RPM range. Any ideas would be appreciated

To: Hondatech and Brandon Nice try, No cigar!
I'm not paranoid, or deaf. Honda replaced the CCT (under warranty) yesterday and all engine rattle is gone. Engine made no ticking or rattling at idle, only at 5-6k rpm.

Blah Blah Blah, did I ask for your opinion?

So are the Cam Chain Tensioners also a problem on the straight F4's?
I know around 9,000 RPM my bike has something that sounds like a metal rattle as well and this just started within this season. Could that be the cause?
Thoughts?

Dr.McNasty, 9,000 to 10 or 11,000 rpm rattle is probably your key rattling in the ignition. Rev it to there and put your finger on the key. If the sound goes away, that's what it is.
I had them change out the ignition switch (and the rest of the key cylinders so the keys all atcm) under warrenty when my F4 was still new. It didn't help and the shop later told me that they mostly all do that.
For a while, I put a foam ring around the base of the key. That worked but eventually I lost the ring and never bothered to make a new one.

seems like this must be a coomon prob, I have an F4 with only 1000k's on it (3 weeks old) and it started the noise at about 600kms old, it comes on at about 3500-4000rpm and then again at 4500-5000rpm, I was paranoid about it but the bike shop said its nuthin to worry about, so now i just either ignore it or ride around it...... but if it gets worse i might look into a warranty replacement job. It just get s annoying during inner city commutes!!! have fun
