2001 F4i - Rattling Noise
« on: July 1, 2002, 04:24:36 PM »

 Huh
Bike has 5K miles.  Has been well maintained and not abused.  At about 3,000 miles the engine started to develop a rattling noise between 5-6,000 RPM.  Performance does not seem hampered.  Sounds like valve train noise to me.  Is this a valve lash issue or maybe the cam chain tensioner?  Not noisy at idle, only in the mid-RPM range.  Any ideas would be appreciated

I reckon if it was the cct you would hear it at idle and at low rev's,Sounds to me it could very well be valve train noise hondatech is your man...

My F4 started doing it around 500-1000 miles in.  It never developed into anything more than an annoyance so I stopped thinking about it.  My bike now has around 14000 miles and has been a race bike this season.

I wouldn't worry about it, but that's just me Smiley

If it isn't at idle, it most likely isn't cct. I'd say it's valve train noise and your being paranoid.

To: Hondatech and Brandon
Nice try, No cigar!

I'm not paranoid, or deaf.  Honda replaced the CCT (under warranty) yesterday and all engine rattle is gone.  Engine made no ticking or rattling at idle, only at 5-6k rpm.

It seems to be the curse of the F4's and well the CBR600 line in general I replaced 3 CCT's in my F3 and my F4 is rattling but only when I hit about 6000 RPM then it stops as soon as I either drop below it or get above it. It does come back once I hit about 9000RPM though. I just said to hell with it and I am waiting till the end of the season and I am going to put in a manual one.

I think a manual cct is the way forward, I've not long ago had mine changed along with the cam chain, plates, etc and it still rattles....next time im going for the manual one...if i can be bothered....is it really worth worrying about ??

So are the Cam Chain Tensioners also a problem on the straight F4's?

I know around 9,000 RPM my bike has something that sounds like a metal rattle as well and this just started within this season.  Could that be the cause?

Thoughts?

Dr.McNasty, 9,000 to 10 or 11,000 rpm rattle is probably your key rattling in the ignition. Rev it to there and put your finger on the key. If the sound goes away, that's what it is.

I had them change out the ignition switch (and the rest of the key cylinders so the keys all atcm) under warrenty when my F4 was still new.  It didn't help and the shop later told me that they mostly all do that.

For a while, I put a foam ring around the base of the key.  That worked but eventually I lost the ring and never bothered to make a new one.

Agree totally. I have a 01 F4i (Rossi) that has a particular rattle around 3K. It really only seems to be apparent when moving. It was up for it's 12000 service the other day, and the mechanic mentioned it was some sort of valve on the air intake. What is he talking about?

As for the CCT problem I think it is a rather widely spread myth. Not to say that some people don't have this problem, but most people when quizzed say that they can't hear it at idle which is normally a dead giveaway.  The only people who I have heard of that have had trouble with the CCT is AFTER they had it replaced.

There is a solenoid used for the low speed air inlets, the things that look like deer whistles. My guess is that is the valve he was refering to.

seems like this must be a coomon prob, I have an F4 with only 1000k's on it (3 weeks old) and it started the noise at about 600kms old, it comes on at about 3500-4000rpm and then again at 4500-5000rpm, I was paranoid about it but the bike shop said its nuthin to worry about, so now i just either ignore it or ride around it...... but if it gets worse i might look into a warranty replacement job. It just get s annoying during inner city commutes!!!
have fun Cool
